Traditionally, cake toppers are known to be little bride and groom figurines, which are then placed perfectly atop a gorgeous wedding cake. However, nowadays, cake toppers are just about as untraditional as the cakes I've been seeing on Pinterest! Between donut cakes and cakes made of cheese, (not to be confused with cheesecake), it's safe to say that creativity and individuality is the driving force behind many weddings, even when it comes to the cake.

The inspiration for my wedding cake topper of course came from Pinterest. I saw dozens of pins showing how many brides and grooms chose to use their last name as their cake topper, and I loved the idea! The one I made in particular can be found for sale on Etsy for anywhere between $10-$30 ....It cost me $1.00; Here's how I made it!

Supplies:

1. Choose your color / pattern! - I knew that I wanted the name to be in gold glitter, as gold was our metallic accent color. I went to Michaels and searched the scrapbook paper aisle until I found the perfect piece of paper. I believe it was $2.00 for a 12"x12" sheet, but I of course had a 50% off coupon, so I got it for $1.00. (I grabbed two sheets just in case I made a mistake!)

2. You need food safe sticks of some sort to attach the name to. I cut down shish kabob skewers, but something like chopsticks would also work! (If you have the Cricut Maker, you can cut much thicker materials like chipboard or even cardboard! If this is the case, you do not need skewers at all, because you can simply design the supporting sticks into your last name as one shape! *Check out the Pinterest image below as an example. 3. You will need an adhesive of your choosing to attach your skewers to your scrapbook paper cutout. (I used hot glue).

Do it Yourself:

1. Break out your Cricut or Silhouette and your laptop! Design your last name in a pretty script (or any type) font you like. Make sure to put all of your letters together so they are all touching. Hit the "weld" button, typically found at the bottom right corner of your screen. *This is IMPORTANT! If you forget to hit "weld", your machine will cut each letter individually, even where they overlap, so the letters will just fall apart instead of remaining as one whole word/shape.

2. Set the material dial on your machine to the appropriate setting. I set mine to poster because the glitter scrapbook paper is rather thick. (You may have to cut your name a few times until you find the perfect setting!)

3. Once finished cutting, weed through any excess material.

4. Attach your last name to your skewers using an adhesive of your choice; I used hot glue. (I also added some scotch tape to be safe.)

5. Cut down your skewers to your desired height.

6. VOILA! You have your $1, gorgeous cake topper!

7. Store your topper in a safe place! I placed mine in a ziplock baggie, and put it in a box of wedding decor.

As you can see, this is a super short and "sweet" craft! I loved my cake topper, and I'm so happy I made it myself! Get inspired, be creative and get to work!

Until next week, my beauties.

xoxo
